What a chiropractor actually does for lower back pain
Most people know a chiropractor works on the back. Fewer know what actually happens in the room. Here is how we approach lower back pain, from the first conversation through to the treatment itself.
The first conversation and the examination
A first appointment starts with a conversation about your complaint: how the pain started, what makes it worse, whether it travels into your buttock or leg, and what an ordinary day involves in terms of work, sport and sitting. We then look at your posture and at how your lower back and pelvis move. Where it is useful we run straightforward orthopaedic and neurological tests, for example if you notice tingling or weakness in a leg. Careful palpation tells us which joints in the lower back are moving less freely.
The MyoVision scan
Where it adds something, we take a MyoVision scan along the spine. It measures muscle activity on each side and records a baseline we can compare against later. The scan is quick, non-invasive and painless.
The treatment itself
An adjustment is a quick, targeted movement applied to a joint that is not moving well. For lower back pain that usually means the joints of the lower back and the pelvis. We also work on the surrounding muscle and soft tissue, and you leave with exercises and advice for home and for how you sit at work. We explain which technique we intend to use, and why, before we start. If a technique does not suit you, we choose another.
How long it takes
A first appointment usually runs 30 to 45 minutes, because the examination and the explanation take time. Follow-up appointments are shorter, often 10 to 20 minutes. How many appointments someone needs varies, and depends on the complaint, how long it has been there and what you pick up at home. We do not promise miracles. We aim for steady progress and explain what we are seeing as we go.
What you may notice afterwards
Some people move more freely straight away, others notice a change over the following days. Mild stiffness or muscle soreness for a day is common, and feels much like the day after exercise. If something does not feel right, tell us and we will adjust the plan.
When to call your doctor first
Call your GP, or the out of hours service, straight away if you have sudden weakness in a leg, numbness around the seat or the inner thighs, or any loss of bladder or bowel control. The same applies after a fall or an accident, and if back pain comes with fever or unexplained weight loss.
